How to Use a Urine Testing Kit for Opiates

  1. Bring the test cup to room temperature (15–30°C).

  2. Open the foil pouch and remove the test cup and gloves. Label the cup with the donor’s details.

  3. The donor should urinate directly into the cup, filling it between the 30 mL and 110 mL markers.

  4. Seal the cup and return it to the collection official.

  5. The collector, wearing gloves, removes the result label and reads the result at 5 minutes.
Do not interpret results after 10 minutes.

How to Use a Saliva Testing Kit for Opiates

  1. Ensure all test components are at room temperature (15–30°C).

  2. Instruct the donor to avoid food, drink, gum, or tobacco for 10 minutes prior.

  3. Open the sealed pouch and remove the collection sponge and test cube.

  4. Insert the sponge into the mouth and swab for 2–3 minutes until fully saturated.

  5. Place the saturated sponge into the test cube and screw it in to release the fluid.

  6. Place the cube on a flat surface, remove the label, and start a timer once flow appears in the test windows.

  7. If fluid doesn’t migrate after 3 minutes, gently rotate the test cube 4–5 times.

  8. Read the results between 3–10 minutes.
If all lines are clearly visible at 3 minutes, results can be read earlier.

If testing for alcohol: Read the alcohol pad at 2 minutes and compare to the colour chart provided.

How Long Does It Take to Get Results?

Test Type Time to Results Factors That May Affect It
Urine Test Kit ~5 minutes Hydration, urinary pH, frequency of opiate use.
Saliva Test Kit 3–10 minutes Best suited for recent use detection.

What Affects Opiate Detection Times?

Opiate detection windows depend on several personal and drug-related factors:

  • Type & potency: Stronger opiates (e.g., heroin, morphine, oxycodone) can remain longer in the system.

  • Usage patterns: Frequent or high-dose users may test positive for longer durations.

  • Metabolism: A faster metabolism flushes out drugs more efficiently.

  • Hydration: Staying hydrated speeds up metabolite elimination.

  • Health conditions: Liver or kidney issues can delay drug clearance.

  • Body fat percentage: Metabolites can be stored in fat cells, extending detection time.

  • Other drugs: Alcohol and medications may interact with opiate breakdown and influence test results.
